The Fault in Our Stars

With the movie releasing really soon I thought I would take the chance to get the book and read it. I'm very picky about reading the book before watching the movie, or the tv show. I saw the book for sale at Costco so I decided to buy it.

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten

Hazel was diagnosed with terminal stage thyroid cancer, so she graduated early from high and spends the majority of her time reading books and watching the reruns of America's Next Top Model. Hazels mother drops her off at a support group for kids with cancer. There Hazel meets Gus, who had bone cancer. Gus invites her to his house to watch a movie and things move forward from there. Gus keeps trying to get Hazel to open up to him, but she doesn't want to hurt him with the fact that she could die at any moment. After Hazel ends up in the hospital with an pneumonia Gus has arranged for them to go meet an author. While they are there Gus has to tell Hazel some troubling news to tell her.

I think the story was written pretty good. There were a lot of parts I felt were telling a lot of the story as opposed to showing, but the story had a really solid plot. Sometimes I found it hard to connect to Hazel.

There was one quote I really enjoyed in the book. It has to be the only quote I can hear over and over again, and that is constantly shown in all the previews on T.V. "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, an I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and there will come a day when all out labor has been returned to dist, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you."

The only other problem I had with the book was the fact that it tried to make cancer seem romantic. The reason I found this to be really touchy subject for me is because cancer runs in my family. I have some who are survivors, and some who lost their lives to cancer.

If you want to get away from all the paranormal books out there, and read something that is contemporary you may enjoy this book.
